Alliance Releases Community Snapshot of Memphis-Shelby County


The Alliance has released a Community Snapshot of Memphis-Shelby County, Tennessee that provides an overview of the community's progress on ending homelessness. From 2012 to 2013, overall homelessness in Memphis-Shelby County decreased by 12.5 percent and chronic homelessness among individuals decreased by 17 percent. Community stakeholders identified an increase in the supply of permanent supportive housing, prioritization of chronic homelessness, and conversion of transitional housing as instrumental in reaching these decreases.





President to Deliver State of the Union Address
Tonight, President Barack Obama will deliver the 2014 State of the Union address. In his speech, the President is expected to cover topics including college tuition affordability, consumer financial protection, and skills training. He is also expected to urge Congress to address issues such as income inequality and economic mobility.
Treasury Secretary Calls for Action on Debt Limit
Last Wednesday, January 22, Treasury Secretary Jacob J. Lew wrote a letter to congressional leaders explaining that Congress must act to raise the debt limit in February in order to avoid hitting the debt ceiling. Democrats are calling for a clean increase in borrowing authority while Republicans want other provisions that reduce the deficit to be included in the deal.
House to Depart for Recess
The House will depart for recess after session adjourns on Wednesday, January 29. House Republicans will attend their annual retreat Thursday, January 30, and Friday, January 31. The House will return to session on Monday, February 3.
One government shutdown and nearly four months later, Congress finally completed fiscal year (FY) 2014 funding on January 17. We were relieved and excited to see an increase for HUD's McKinney-Vento Homeless Assistance Grants ($176 million increase, including an expansion of ESG funds).
