SAMHSA Presents - Making the Transition from Homelessness to Tenancy Webinar

SAMHSA's Homeless and Housing Resource Network (HHRN) is pleased to announce the upcoming webinar: Making the Transition from Homelessness to Tenancy.
The first part of this presentation will offer participants a toolbox designed to help individuals move from experiencing homelessness to living in housing. The toolbox will include a review of housing preferences, timelines, transition tools, and support tools. The second part of the webinar features the perspective of an individual with lived experience who successfully transitioned from homelessness to permanent housing.
Webinar Presenters
Laurie Curtis
In her over 30-year career, Ms. Curtis has worked as a practitioner, manager, educator, and consultant, always focusing on helping people diagnosed with serious mental health problems to live rewarding lives in their communities.
For over a decade, she worked with the Center for Community Change through Housing and Support – the first national technical assistance and training center for supported housing. She helped establish the principles that all people should have in their lives choice, regular housing, tailored supports, and community.
Now with Advocates for Human Potential (AHP), Ms. Curtis works with initiatives focusing on permanent supportive housing, shared decision making, workforce development, and promoting recovery principles as everyday practices.
All her work has been informed by lived experience as a family member and person in recovery.
Carl Smith
Carl Smith is a Native American Indian (Navajo) single parent of two children―19-year old daughter, Ashley, who is currently in college studying Social Work, and 11-year old son, Christian, who is attending a private Christian school. Carl obtained his Masters in Social Work and is in recovery from substance abuse and homelessness.
Mr. Smith is a strong advocate in his community, including those from the Navajo Nation, as well as for homelessness and discrimination. He also is actively involved in politics with the Navajo Nation government. Carl was employed with CARE 66 in Gallup, New Mexico, which provides transitional and permanent housing, as well as job placements for the homeless population. He recently decided to leave the team he built, but the organization will continue helping individuals who need services. Carl currently has many trades and experiences and is working from home volunteering his time and services for people in need.
