Conference Reminder: Scholarships Opportunities Available


The Alliance is currently accepting applications for its scholarship program for our 2014 National Conference on Ending Family and Youth Homelessness, which will take place at the Sheraton San Diego Hotel and Marina, Feb. 18 to 20. The deadline to submit an application for the scholarship program is Wednesday, Dec. 3. Only individuals who are currently experiencing homelessness or who have experienced homelessness in the past are eligible to apply. More information about the scholarship program is available on the scholarships page of the conference website.





House Announces HUD Subcommittee Chair
On Thursday, Nov. 20, House Appropriations Committee Chair Hal Rogers (R-KY) named Representative Mario Diaz-Balart (R-FL) chair of the Transportation, Housing and Urban Development, and Related Agencies (T-HUD) Subcommittee for the 114th Congress. The T-HUD Subcommittee is responsible for allocating appropriations for housing and homelessness programs, including the McKinney-Vento Homeless Assistance Grants Program.
Congress Departs for Recess
The House departed for the Thanksgiving recess on Friday, Nov. 21, and the Senate will depart for Thanksgiving recess Wednesday, Nov. 26. Members of Congress are expected to reconvene Monday, Dec. 1. Upon their return, Congress will have very few legislative days remaining to finalize funding for fiscal year 2015 prior to the current continuing resolution ending Dec. 11.



On Tuesday Dec. 9, at 1 p.m. ET, the Alliance will host a webinar on housing identification, a core component of rapid re-housing. The webinar, "Rapid Re-Housing Core Component: Housing Identification" is the first in a webinar series on the guidance on rapid re-housing, "Core Components of Rapid Re-Housing," which the Alliance crafted in cooperation with the Departments of Housing and Urban Development (HUD), Veterans Affairs (VA), and the U.S. Interagency Council on Homelessness (USICH). Experienced rapid re-housing providers will discuss strategies to recruit landlords and locate housing to quickly end homelessness for families and individuals.
This January, communities across the country will conduct a Point-in-Time (PIT) Count of their homeless population. Historically, one of the shortcomings of PIT counts has been their exclusion of homeless youth. In this post, we look at how Las Vegas improved their youth count.
