2014 Point-in-Time Count Results Released

On Oct. 30, the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) announced the latest estimate of homelessness in the United States, noting a continued general decline and specifically among Veterans and persons living on the street. HUD's 2014 Annual Homeless Assessment Report to Congress reports that 578,424 persons were experiencing homelessness on a single night in 2014. This represents an overall 10 percent reduction and 25 percent drop in the unsheltered population since 2010, the year the Obama Administration launched Opening Doors, the nation's first comprehensive strategy to prevent and end homelessness.

Good News from New Orleans: Federal and Community Collaboration Helped Transform This Veteran's Life | by DaVaughn Phillips
Mr. H. seems like a completely different person from the man I met just a few months ago. He is thriving in his own home, with a stable income to maintain his living expenses and support his family. More importantly, he has regained the strength, motivation, and courage he needed to become self-sufficient and to serve as a positive role model for his children. After three years of working in New Orleans to help people achieve permanent housing, it never ceases to amaze me how rewarding it feels to play a role in such a transformation.

Proof Point: The 2014 Point-in-Time Count Shows that Homelessness Is a Solvable Problem

USICH Executive Director Laura Green Zeilinger provides an overview of the results of the 2014 Point-in-Time-Count of people experiencing homelessness in the United States. In addition to the overall 10 percent decline in the total homeless population, family homelessness is down 15 percent; 53 percent fewer families are living unsheltered. Chronic homelessness is down 21 percent; 14 percent unsheltered. There's been a slight downturn in youth homelessness, but particularly noteworthy are the declines seen among Veterans — down 33 percent overall, unsheltered down 43 percent. Get more analysis.
