Mayor Landrieu Announces New Orleans Has Ended Veteran Homelessness


New Orleans Mayor Mitch Landrieu announced last week that his city had housed 227 homeless veterans, exceeding its goal of housing the 193 homeless veterans counted in the 2014 homeless census and effectively bringing an end to veteran homelessness in the city.
"What New Orleans has accomplished for homeless veterans shows that this is a problem that can be solved," said Alliance President and CEO Nan Roman. "In the future, homelessness among veterans in New Orleans should be rare and brief. Every city and town in America should take a look at New Orleans and say, 'if they can do it, so can we.'"
The Alliance has published a "Community Snapshot of New Orleans, LA," an online resource that examines the city's successful effort to address veteran homelessness. The Alliance recently recognized New Orleans as one of the 14 largest metro areas that had reduced homelessness among veterans by more than 50 percent in three years.





Congress Elects Leaders, Makes Progress on Committee Assignments
The 114th Congress convened on Tuesday, Jan. 6 and shortly thereafter elected leadership for the House and Senate. Rep. John Boehner, R-Ohio, was re-elected as Speaker of the House for another two-year term. Rep. Kevin McCarthy, R-Calif., was re-elected as House Majority Leader, and Rep. Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., was re-elected as House Minority Leader. In the Senate, Senator Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., was elected as Senate Majority Leader, and Senator Harry Reid, D-Nev., was elected as the Senate Minority Leader.
On Thursday, Jan. 8, the Senate passed an organizational resolution making majority party committee appointments. Notably, Senator Susan Collins R-Maine, and Senator Jack Reed, D-R.I., will serve as Chair and Ranking Member of the Appropriations Subcommittee on Transportation, Housing and Urban Development, and Related Agencies, respectively. Several House committees have also announced their member rosters, but Republicans have not yet released their full committee roster.
Congress to Depart for Recess
The House will depart for recess for the Martin Luther King, Jr. Day after session ends tomorrow, Jan. 14, while the Senate will depart after session ends on Friday, Jan. 16. Both chambers will return for session on Tuesday, Jan. 20.
