NEXT Tuesday, September 15 and Wednesday, September 16 are National Call-In Days! Congress returned from its summer recess on September 8 and is preparing to begin negotiations on finalizing fiscal year (FY) 2016 federal funding.
We need to use this time, particularly September 15 and September 16, to call congressional offices about the importance of raising the federal sequester spending caps and providing a $345 million increase for McKinney programs in FY 2016. The Alliance is coordinating these call-in days with Caps Hurt Communities, an advocacy campaign committed to ending the federal sequester spending caps.
On September 15 and 16, between 9am-5pm EST, participating advocates from across the country will call their members of Congress by dialing the Congressional switchboard at 877-210-5351, and explain the detrimental impact that flat funding or budget cuts to housing and homeless assistance programs would have on their communities. They should deliver this simple message: raise the federal sequester spending caps to robustly fund affordable housing programs and provide $2.480 billion for the McKinney-Vento Homeless Assistance Grants program in FY 2016.
$2.480 billion for homeless assistance programs would help us end chronic homelessness by the end of 2017 and make significant reductions among other populations. Even in another difficult budget year, Congress should be working to ensure that we help those who are most in need.
