HUD Secretary to Lead UN Delegation U.S. Department of Housing & Urban Development (HUD) Secretary Julián Castro will lead the U.S. delegation at the United Nations (UN) Conference on Housing and Sustainable Urban Development (Habitat III) October 17-20 in Quito, Ecuador. Castro will join the global community as they work to develop a “New Urban Agenda,” an action-oriented outcome document that will put housing at the center of urban policy.   The Alliance contributed to The U.S. 20/20 Habitat III, a report released by HUD in preparation of the Conference that focuses on three themes: promoting upward mobility for underserved Americans, expanding employment and educational resources and investing in community institutions.   Read an excerpt from the report» news alert Housing First Now Mandatory in California New legislation in California now makes Housing First an absolute. The law, signed last week by Governor Jerry Brown, will now require that all state-level funders and programs provide Housing First to anyone experiencing or at-risk of homelessness. The bill also established a statewide council to oversee this statewide shift.  See the full bill » VA Awards Funds to Serve Homeless Veterans with Special Needs Sixteen communities have received $3.4 million to help find housing and provide services to veterans with the greatest needs in their communities. The funding is offered through the U.S. Department of Veteran Affairs Grant and Per Diem program. This includes removing barriers so children and youth experiencing homelessness can access extracurricular and other academic programs.
