HUD Releases 2017 HMIS Data Standards Data Dictionary Version 1.2, Instructions for Mapping Existing HMIS Data, and Updated CSV and XML Schemas

HUD has recently released the 2017 HMIS Data Dictionary Version 1.2 and Instructions for Mapping Existing HMIS Data. The 2017 HMIS Data Dictionary documents the requirements for the programming and use of all HMIS systems and comparable database systems, effective October 1, 2017. HMIS software must be able to collect all the data elements defined within this HMIS Data Dictionary, support the system logic, including dependencies, identified in the document, and ensure that the data collection and the visibility of data elements is appropriate to the project type and federal funding source for any given project. This release of the HMIS Data Dictionary supersedes the previously released 2017 HMIS Data Standards Data Dictionary Version 1.0. Version 1.2 contains several revisions that provide further clarification for users.
The 2017 Instructions for Mapping Existing HMIS Data for 2014 Version 5.1 HMIS Data Standards Elements is designed to show the changes found in the 2017 HMIS Data Standards for the Universal Data Elements and the Program-Specific Data Elements.
The updated 2017 CSV schema and 2017 XML schema are available on the Homelessness Data Exchange (HDX).
If you have questions about the data dictionary, please submit them through the HUD Exchange Ask a Question (AAQ) portal. On Step 2 of the question submission process, select “HMIS” in the “My question is related to” dropdown.
