House Appropriations Committee releases draft spending bill for Housing and Urban development |
This week the House Appropriations Committee released its draft spending bill for Fiscal Year 2018. As the appropriations process continues, details will be revised, but here are some things to note regarding programs that focus on Americans with the lowest incomes:
- This bill is based on spending caps that return to very low “sequestration” levels, then go lower.
- Proposed spending for homeless assistance is level, which allows for programs to maintain capacity, but falls further behind the actual need.
- Nominal increases for Section 8 don’t keep up with rent increases, so fewer people will get housed.
- Public housing continues to be funded below maintenance level.
For more details on the draft bill, and information about what you can do about it, read our latest blog post here. |

TRUE COLORS FUND TAKING NOMINATIONS FOR THE 40 OF THE 40 LIST |
The 40 of the 40 list provides a platform for the 40% of youth experiencing homelessness who identify as lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, or questioning, age 18-24. Youth are the experts of their own truths, and we aim to honor their voices and their stories. Our goal is to inspire hope and help reduce the stigma often associated with housing instability and homelessness.
The 40 of the 40 list gives young people a unique opportunity to become spokespeople for their communities and apply for the True Fellowship program. We want to offer the same opportunities and more to 2018’s list of honorees – but first we need YOU to nominate them! |
